French term

abri

The "abri" here is indeed a kind of shelter. It is a round hut without walls, made of wood with a thatch roof and found in a subtropical South Pacific island.

I'm trying to find something more "exotic" and somewhat more appealing than "shelter" as the document is a touristic brochure.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Teri Szucs

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Jack Dunwell Mar 19, 2008:
as, clearly there wont be a Parisian or Accrington equivalent!
Jack Dunwell Mar 19, 2008:
I've given an answer for Mexico and parts of South America and it is acceptable in California,; there are many answers given for european structures, and generic answers. Shouldn't we be looking for the South Pacific answer,
Victoria Porter-Burns Mar 19, 2008:
Are the walls proper 'floor to ceiling' walls? In which case I don't think 'gazebo' does it - these are more flimsy structures which have 'wooden railings' around the edge rather than walls.

Peer comment(s):

agree Bourth (X) : As in "whare" (pron. "faré"), the Maori word for house: thus "library" is "te whare puka puka". I actually suspect a "fare" is similarly enclosed.

cabana

Just an idea. Cabanas are often closed, but in fact (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/cabana) it only technically means a cabin/hut. Would certainly give the idea IMHO.

Although in fact the term has taken on a wider usage in recent years to also cover those indispensable canopies used at English outdoor events to protect from the inevitable rain!

abstract it - thatched shade

I agree, hut, shelter, cabin, gazebo, palapa (never heard of it previously) all have their disadvantages.

Get round the issue by referring not to the STRUCTURE (or only in general terms, as with "structure") but to its PURPOSE (with some reinforcing indication of its constituent materials.

Your island may well have a specific term for it. While "bure" is a type of Fijian house, in the tourist industry it seems to be used for unwalled shading structures (see above **). More on "bure" at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bure_(Fiji).

thatch / thatched hut

There are different styles of thatch/thatched huts with no walls. Some of them look like large parasols/umbrellas, others look more like a shed or shack with no walls. I think the term is enough to get the point across.

open-sided huts

I don't see anything wrong with using the word 'hut' here, as presumably this is a casual setting on the beach. You could also say 'open-sided pavilion' if there is just one large structure. (Cf "The Resort’s main restaurant is located under an open-sided thatched roof pavilion overlooking the swimming pool and lagoon." http://www.tourismsouthasia.com/maldives/resorts/four_season...

You could add the word 'thatched', but I don't think this is necessary here since there is obviously a photo of the structure.
