I'd like some beyond the dictionary suggestions for this term (the context is 'textiles' only because it is about sanitary pads, but I had to click on something!). DOe they mean the tacky, crude way the pad is depicted in the ad ?
Here is the sentence (verbatim transcriptions so please excuse presentation!)
".quand ils montrent la serviette vraiment ouverte ? la facon dont c est ouvert ils pourraient la montrer sur le cote de facon plus fine /

hmmm, not sure. "less obvious" has just sprung to mind - which might be an OK register if you're translating the ad people's comments for example on the shot

It is easier to render the idea negatively in English! I'm wondering if a closer translation ('with more finesse') would be used by the woman-in-the street ?

I don't think they would have said "de façon plus fine" in that case, but I can see Claire's point. Like you my initial reaction was "less in your face"!

I wondered if I'd see interpretations like Claire's! Thinness is often cited but (despite the clumsy way it is expressed) do you really think the criticism is about the actual pad ? Till now I've been looking for an adjective that would mean the opposite of too 'in your face' (no joke intended!)

The way that I am reading it, they are saying that the pad should be shown from the side so that it looks thinner.

Some pads have wings to hold them in place. So, if a pad is shown open, it can look really wide. If it is shown from side, it looks thinner, which is more comfortable.
