French to English Other Slang
Hi, I am translating a video transcript from French (Burkina Faso) to English (United Kingdom). It tells the story of Fatao, who runs away from home after a conflict with his stepmother. He reaches the capital city and needs a place to stay the night. He finds some other children living under a shed and talks to them. It is in this conversation that the tricky phrase appears. Below is a large section of the transcript to give you full context:

- « Petit chien » ! Approche. Bâtard."

Does anyone know what "sauce" refers to please? It is clearly some kind of slang, as Fatao does not understand it judging by the streetchild's response. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Discussion

Tony M Apr 1, 2015:
In other contexts... ...I'd perhaps have expected him to say something like "See what sort of stuff you're made of!" — possibly suggesting some kind of combat to see who is the strongest, etc.
Yet that seems inconsistent with the language used in the source text, which I find it hard to interpret as anything other than sexually suggestive.
Perhaps this dominant male is just a bit like Fagin in 'Oliver Twist'....
DLyons Apr 1, 2015:
I totally agree with Tony here. There's also the question as to how explicit this should be.
Tony M Apr 1, 2015:
@ Asker While I am basically in agreement with our answerers so far, and this was indeed the first interpretation that came into my smutty little mind, I can't help thinking that some caution may be called for here.
Given that the person whose permission is being asked is presumably a dominant male, it seems slightly odd he might be eager to perform what is usually regarded as a submissive act on the newcomer — whom one might have expected would have to undergo some sort of 'rite of passage'. Now there is of course nothing to say that these roles might not be reversed, or possibly it might be some kind of cultural thing; but it just somehow seems a little odd to me...
DLyons Apr 1, 2015:
Sausage seems like a good option, there's a phrase "playing hide the sausage".
Something like, "First, I'd have to chew on your sausage" might work.
Matt Valentine (asker) Apr 1, 2015:
Thanks for the responses so far. Really helpful :) I particularly like "we won't let your meat loaf" because it would work with Fatao's response. I might move away from that slightly though, so that the food reference is slightly more universal. Maybe something like "I'm going to have to have some of your sausage". Don't know whether that's moving too far away from the source though.
DLyons Apr 1, 2015:
Depends on the audience, but Wayne's World has a lovely moment where he is ordering a Chinese take-out "I'll have the cream of sum yung gai".

<may offend!!> I'd like to get a taste of your juice

Hello,

I agree with DLyons, it means "to have sex".

I have just been thinking this sentence over to try to find a way to render the pun... and I am sorry if this is not appropriate or if this offends anyone (hence the low confidence).

However, I'm thinking a somewhat literal translation here could convey the meaning. After all, even though the French term might be older, it is still strong and very graphic...

For example:
"Sleep with us? I'd like to get a taste of your juice"
"I don't have any juice..."

I really am just guessing here...
Peer comment(s):

agree DLyons : Maybe something American like "we won't let your meat loaf". But it depends on ST, audience, ...

Thank you ! I wonder what Matthew will go for..
agree philgoddard : Good idea.

Thanks a lot Phil
agree Tony M : But not so much "I'd like to..." as "I'll have to..." — or "You'll have to let me..." Note as it is a boy, it might mean it in a different kind of way...

Agreed, thank you
agree Sheri P : I've never heard the expression DLyons mentions in his comment. I must not be hanging out with the right people :-)

To be fair, I haven't either... Thank you!
agree Daryo : that's closer to the ST // assuming that it's what is meant - it's quite ambigious

French term (edited): goûter à ta sauce

to have sex

I'll have to taste you

I don't think you need to translate 'ta sauce', it sounds odd in English.

Alternatively,

I've got to taste you
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : But that would sound distinctly odd, more like cannibalism, or some weird rite! There needs to be soething in there to convey the sexual connotation (assuming, of course, there is one!)

I'll have to try some of your special sauce

I like the other suggestions, particularly the one using sausage, but if you want to keep closer to the original, I think just adding the word "special" works. Then you get a reference to McDonald's special sauce, an edible, and for some reason it suddenly sounds sexual (or is it just me?).
