French term

dizainier

French to English Other Religion Religious Jewellery
Hi, I'm translating a catalogue for religious jewellery, and I'm not sure if we have an equivalent term for "dizainier" in English?

I can't give much context as it mainly appears as a title or above images which I can't attach here. I did find this definition though:

"Un dizainier est aussi un objet de piété constitué en général d'une croix et de 10 grains ou créneaux; aide à la prière et à la méditation, il prend le relais du chapelet sous une forme plus simplifiée et plus discrète."

The images I have seem to fit this: there are different versions, but they all seem to be either a bracelet or small necklace made of beads and either a cross or a small medal or symbol.

Does anyone know what we call this in English? Thanks!

one-decade rosary

I think the ten beads are meant for counting.

agree Charles Davis : I find there's a type called an auto rosary, which is a one-decade with a clasp for hooking to the rear-view mirror so you can say your prayers in the car. Sounds a bit dangerous to me, like using a mobile phone. I wonder if you could be prosecuted.

Thanks Charles. I once knew a family who said the Rosary at the start of every car journey. Perhaps it worked, none of them ever died in a car crash - but then nobody I know personally ever died in a car crash.
agree David Hayes : Also called a 'single-decade rosary'. If it is a ring worn on a finger, this is often called a 'rosary ring'. Standard rosary beads actually have five decades of beads.

Thanks Rachel.
agree AllegroTrans : Having looked at web images and googled, "single-decade rosary" also seems to be the term used

Thanks AllegroTrans. Yes, that may be more standard.

dizainier

It can be a rosary as we normally understand it, ie a set of beads on a string. But if Google Images is anything to go by, the beads are often fixed in position around the edge.

Unless you have pictures and you know that they're all ten-bead stringed rosaries, I'd leave it in French.

neutral AllegroTrans : Would any EN-speaker understand the FR term?

No, depending on the target readership, you would probably need to include a few words of explanation.
disagree David Hayes : I do think this needs to be translated, especially since a standard English term is available. http://www.catholicgiftshop.co.uk/one_decade_rosaries___sing...

But there isn't. Most people would understand a rosary to mean a string of beads. If you look at Google Images, the majority of "dizainiers" are not.

It is about the size of the rosary.
