French term

coque cylindrique de révolution

French to English Law/Patents Physics gas storage
Context:

having difficulty in imagining how this cylindrical object operates.
Patents are supposed to be fairly clear in their description but unless it`s the French revolution rising up then I don`t know.
I don`t think it rotates so word "revolution" might in fact not be needed.
Any suggestions most welcome.
TIA Chris.

Discussion

Philippe Etienne Jan 22, 2021:
"de révolution" It simply means a 3D shape made by a 2D shape turned around by an angle of 360° around an axis. Un cylindre "de révolution" is made by a straight line parallel to the axis of symmetry about where this line is turned around. With a circle, you get a torus (O-ring, ITER) or a sphere. In the real world, a tube is a "cylindre de révolution". I suspect "de révolution" here is meant to emphasize the concentric nature of the "coque" (French word) and the "structure de stockage". In plain text, a "cylindre" is always a "cylindre de révolution", on Earth at least. Think "révolution" as "révolution de la Terre autour du soleil". English "revolution" is a faux-ami except is this case.
chris collister Jan 21, 2021:
"Cylindrical shell of revolution" is both what it says and what it means. There are many bodies of revolution (cones, parabolids, etc.) but not all are cylindrical.
Althea Draper Jan 21, 2021:
Not too sure of the 'patentese' but, this analysys of structures book shows a 'coque cylindrique de révolution' as a hollow cylindrical shell

and this paper "On the creep analysis of pressurized circular cylindrical shells" translates 'coque cylindrique de révolution' as a "circular cylindrical shell".

neutral chris collister : A body of revolution can be solid - this is a shell, i.e. a thin-walled body.
