French term

dispositif semiconducteur intégré de modulation de lumière ultrarapide

French to English Tech/Engineering Physics
The term is: Dispositif semiconducteur intégré de modulation de lumière ultrarapide à zone d'interaction confinée - Modulateur de porteuse optique par plasmon de surface à base de semiconducteurs. I know this is a long term, but it is one term and breaking it up into smaller sections would probably just complicate things. The term is taken from a funding application for a major French univeristy lab. The portion of the document that I am translating is a list of the partners involved in the project for which funding is being sought as well as a description of the types of activities and achievements associated with each of the partners. This section then, describes the various types of research activities and achievements associated with this particular lab. The full sentence is as follows:
Enfin, le labo XX a participé en 2008 au dépôt d’un brevet portant sur un "Dispositif semiconducteur intégré de modulation de lumière ultrarapide à zone d'interaction confinée - Modulateur de porteuse optique par plasmon de surface à base de semiconducteurs".

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I tried WIPO and a couple of other similar sites, but am not familiar with Espacenet. I will try that. Thanks!
chris collister Nov 19, 2010:
Patent If they filed a patent in 2008, it should be available on Espacenet or one of the other patent websites. Hence there may well be a helpful translation of the abstract. Nonetheless, with so many latin words, a literal translation won't be too far off the mark.
philgoddard Nov 19, 2010:
This is way too long, and I have a feeling the moderators are going to delete it, but couldn't you go with a literal translation for the bit before the hyphen? I'm not a technical translator, but it doesn't look difficult to me.

integrated semiconductor device for extra-high-speed light modulation

For 'rapide', in electronics we usually talk about 'fast' or 'high-speed'.

'High-speed modulation' sounds correct to my ears.

I think this 'dispositif intégré' is an 'integrated device', i.e. probably an integrated circuit-type component

ultra-rapid integrated light modulating semi-conductor

Aren't french descriptive phrases wonderful!
Peer comment(s):

agree Tony M : My only quibble is that it sounds as if this is possibly an 'integrated s/c device' (I suppose some kind of IC), so I think that maybe the 'integrated' needs to be moved? And I can't help thinking we'd talk about 'fast' in this sort of context.
