français term

vendu en food, para,...

français vers anglais Sciences Médecine : médicaments Cosmetics
This is taken from a document relating to the boundary between cosmetics and drugs and the confusion caused by the marketing of these products.

"Peut-on valablement parler de risque de confusion quand le produit est vendu en *food, para*, vpc?"

Obviously 'vpc' is referring to the products being sold by mail-order, but 'en food, para' makes no sense at all to me. Could it be a typo for something else (though I'm struggling to think what!)?

Any suggestions, as always, much appreciated.
TIA

cjohnstone Mar 4, 2008:
fully agree with CMJ, parapharmacie seems best
CMJ_Trans (X) Mar 4, 2008:
probably - parapharmacie = the big difference in France between pharmacie and parapharmacie (only the former of which can sell prescription drugs))

Hi Victoria

There are some good entries for "parapharmacie" in the glossary eg. http://www.proz.com/kudoz/1554128

Here is my answer when "en food" came up a while back:
http://www.proz.com/kudoz/1215284

food
Appellation familière du circuit de distribution des grandes et moyennes surfaces (GMS), dont le référencement comporte essentiellement des produits alimentaires.

Seems the English equivalent is "food channels"

"The final consumer obtains organic food and beverages mainly through natural food stores followed by conventional supermarkets and other food channels."

“The significant shift of non-food CPG shopping and purchasing from mass merchandiser and food channels to ‘discount’ channels reveals acceleration in multi-channel shopping."

Sorry, I meant confidence to be 3 but got caught out by the slippery scroll-down again!

Sales of nutritional supplements in food channels stayed flat in 2004. The food channel’s sales share is the smallest among the 3 distribution channels, at less than 10 percent, and sales stayed the same as the year before - $1.0 billion.

agree Lori Cirefice : food channels is correct IMO

Thanks, Lori.
neutral ormiston : for 'food channels' on the web you get mainly culinary references. The French use 'food' to mean supermarkets IMO

sold in hyper/supermarkets, drugstores/parapharmacies

"vpc" is distance-selling.

For "food", I'm pretty sure because I've already heard this word during internships in the marketing field.

"Para" is indeed for "parapharmacie".

Hope this helps!
Peer comment(s):

agree ormiston : YES - it means supermarket type retail channels! and the para = Parapharmacies

agree Sandra Petch : Very nifty! Or "sold in the same channels as food, cosmetics and healthcare, or by mail order"
