Look at this:

Title: (EN) PROSTHETIC HIP IMPLANTATION METHOD
(FR) PROCEDE D'IMPLANTATION D'UNE PROTHESE DE LA HANCHE
Abstract:

(EN) A surgical instrument system for preparing the medullary canal of the femur for implanting a prosthetic femoral component includes a template (4) to be used in determining osteotomy position for an x-ray (2). A gauge (10) is provided to locate and mark this position on the anterior femur (8). A distal reamer (56) having an elongated drive shaft (60) is used to form the canal to receive the distal stem of the femoral component. A methaphyseal template (80) is used to determine the proper anteversion/retroversion and a chisel (90) is used to cut the lateral area of the femur, both of which are guided by the elongated reamer shaft (60). A proximal broach (100) also guided by the reamer shaft (60) is used to shape the proximal medullary canal.

Peer comment(s):

agree Bourth (X) : I don't know about hip replacement surgery, but in the absolute "reamer" sounds good to me. "Fraise" (in general) would be something for countersinking, or a milling cutter, as in dentistry. Not the same thing.

Thank you!
agree EACK : I haven't been looking up the wrong terminology. "Fraise" is also used in the same text/set of texts and the client prefers the translation "reamer", which is why I am stuck when "alésoir" crops up as well.

Fine:-) Well in French there are two ways of saying "reamer", whereas, it seems to me, there is only one way in English, i.e. "reamer".

drilling machine

Could it be drilling machine
Inter Active Terminology for Europe (IATE) gives the meaning for alésoir as drilling / boring machine
