Discussion

SJLD Mar 23, 2010:
Thanks Tony!
Tony M Mar 23, 2010:
Superscript 3 Just for info, the ³ character is available even under ASCII as Alt + 0179, which is quite handy at times! Alt + 0178 gives ²
Lionel_M (X) Mar 23, 2010:
ml n'est plus accepté dans les pub scientifiques depuis environ 15 ans, mais bon.....tout le monde n'en écrit pas !
SJLD Mar 23, 2010:
ml or mL http://lamar.colostate.edu/~hillger/correct.htm

I wrote cubic mm because it's impossible to write the superscript 3.
And of course it's used in science.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7055637
jeantrans (X) (asker) Mar 23, 2010:
Thanks for the information, Lionel.
Lionel_M (X) Mar 23, 2010:
yes Jean the "3" is superscript; "cubic mm" does not exist in scientific litterature. BTW we use mL and not ml when writting scientific material.
jeantrans (X) (asker) Mar 23, 2010:
Just for the record, should the "3" be put in superscript form?
jeantrans (X) (asker) Mar 23, 2010:
Thanks for the clarification about PI = PL, SJLD. That may have been a typo either in the text or on my part.
Lionel_M (X) Mar 22, 2010:
Sorry,
I havn't check your latest entry !
I was still thinking that your proposition was "cell per cubic mm).
I'm glad you agree with me ☺
SJLD Mar 22, 2010:
Sorry Lionel but I have no idea what you are talking about. When you do a LP, you get a cell count - for RBCs and WBCs. The WBCs are the "nucleated cells". My answer - if you care to read it properly - is "nucleated cells". Where is the problem?
Lionel_M (X) Mar 22, 2010:
Sue, on CSF you can find RBC "mature" without nuclei after a trauma; that's why they are trated as a separate entry on the report.
You cannot confound "nucleated cells" with "cells", otherwise you may confound RBC with nucleated elements.
SJLD Mar 22, 2010:
Only adult/mature RBCs have no nuclei. Immature erythroctyes and percursors do have nuclei. In the case of CSF, you would not expect to find immature RBCs. However, the term "éléments nucléés" is also used for bone marrow (entre autres), in which case it is applied to both red and white cell lines.
Lionel_M (X) Mar 22, 2010:
indeed nucleated cells is one thing, RBC is another one; both are "cells" but not "nucleated elements" in case of RBC
SJLD Mar 22, 2010:

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Well, I decided to use "nucleated cell/mm3". Just for the record, should the "3" be put in superscript form? Maybe it's safer to just say cubic mm. Lionel, I wish I could give points to you too, since you specified "nucleated". Sorry. Thank you to everyone. Jean"
