ressourcing par le service achat

Changing supplier? Franglais, pah! ;-)

Discussion

Sara Freitas Dec 8, 2005:
Hubby's verdict: in general context ressourcing = benchmarking suppliers against other suppliers. In your context, change suppliers.
Charlie Bavington Dec 8, 2005:
The context implies to me that it is indeed the "change supplier" meaning (my option b) below!); you have a new article, a changed article, then finally the same article but procured elsewhere... maybe :-)
Conor McAuley (asker) Dec 8, 2005:
More Ds qu'un article fait l'objet d'une cration, d'une modification (initie par XXX ou par YYY), d'un ***ressourcing***, voir galement ZZZ, il doit suivre le processus ci-inclus
Conor McAuley (asker) Dec 8, 2005:
More context [Supplier Approval/Accreditation Process]

I've sent my text off and was happy enough with my solution, but I'd be interested to know more Sara. (One of the funnier aspects of the job is coming across showy or inappropriate usage of English in French texts).
Sara Freitas Dec 8, 2005:
which is usually "to challenge suppliers"; this involves getting quotes from existing and new suppliers with the ultimate goal of pressuring old ones to lower their prices. This could be the franglais term for that, IMO.
Sara Freitas Dec 8, 2005:
Conor, can you provide more context? If your question isn't too urgent I can run it by my better half tonight when he gets home (he's a corporate purchasing project manager) as to the probable meaning...It could mean "remettre en cause des fournisseurs"

I can see confusion here...

As you say, "Franglais - pah!"

I guess the thing is, it could be:

a) "sourcing" (for the 1st time, if you will), a term I've seen used in "French" (sic), but confused in the author's mind with "ressource", giving rise to this amalgam, where the author possibly just means "finding a (re)source".

b) "re-sourcing" (on a subsequent occasion); as I said, I've seen "sourcing" (used in a context of deciding who the electricity provider will be), so this could be "doing the sourcing again" but with the spelling again influenced by "ressource".

The trouble is, of course, that use of the "re-" prefix in French does not necessarily imply an action being repeated - racheter is an obvious example, and reprendre is also often used when there is no apparent repetition involved.

Hence, unless your context makes it crystal clear that a change of supplier is involved, I'd be quite careful...:-)

Looking on google, I would judge the majority of entries (not including the German ones!) to be a typo for "resourcing" - i.e. the procurement of resources, whether this be for the first or a subsequent time. As such, I would be tempted (not having seen the rest of your text) to use "resource procurement" and leave the whole question open as to whether this is the first time, a change of supplier or whatever.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Unclear writing again to blame (oh, the lure of using English to show off!), but I think change suppliers, or a similar idea is what is meant here. Thanks to all."

locating new sources

I'm not sure I would go with "resourcing" as a commonly used term in business. Your suggestion of changing suppliers might also work, depending on the context.
