French term

élevage porcin à lisier

French to English Science Livestock / Animal Husbandry livestock farming
Following on from my previous question:

This is not really my field at all, but has cropped up as part of an environmental impact dossier for a planning application. Building regulations for livestock farms are included in the submission documents.

Here's the context:

sauf pour l'atelier naisseur où elle ne sera que de 50 mètres, les **élevages porcins à lisier** ne peuvent être implantés à une distance de moins de 100 mètres des immeubles habités ou habituellement occupés par des tiers, des zones de loisirs et de tout établissement recevant du public;

Any suggestions gratefully received. Does it just mean pig farms with liquid manure pits or it something more specific?

Many thanks.

sounds worse than it really is, already!

This makes it sound as if the animals are up to their hocks in it ...

It actually means "élevage sur caillebottis", or "floor slats", which is the EU-approved word for the things, at least as far as the manufacturers of concrete ones are concerned.

grid

I believe that the lisier is a grid through which the slurry falls for subsequent disposal
Peer comment(s):

agree Bourth (X) : "Grid" may well be said. "Floor slats" is the term I'm familiar with.

swine operation using a liquid manure/slurry system

not exactly as concise, but "lisier" is the liquid manure/slurry that needs to be managed

agree MoiraB : or 'pig farms using...' in the context. 'Swine' is more N American usage.

thank you Moira :-)
agree B D Finch : Full marks for the pig portrait at the bottom of the page of your reference! As the asker is in the UK, it should probably be "pig farm".

thank you BD, I did not know that swine wouldn't fly in the UK. ;-)
