French term

battue

French to English Other Livestock / Animal Husbandry hunting
In a text about leisure pursuits in a particular area. The title is "Battue au sanglier en forêt domaniale", and later on it says "Si l'Office National des Forêts
Any thoughts, please, about what sort of hunt this is? I realise that it is with beaters, but I don't know anything about hunting, so don't know the vocab. Thanks in advance for any help.

update, in view of a recent It>En Q. - http://www.proz.com/kudoz/italian_to_english/sports_fitness_...

It was my pleasure to welcome a group from Norfolk in Slovakia. Not only were the folks from Norfolk excellent shots and broke the shooting ground record in wild boar driven shooting, but they also had great fun exploring the local traditions. Result - 19 Boars, challenging birds, and unforgettable memories to take back to England. Here is what they had to say after their successful weekend:

Pheasant_shooting

Dear Eva,

Thank you for organising such a fantastic weekend, the whole trip was brilliant and we all loved it. I will never forget the excitement of the boar shooting and the fun and tradition of the ceremonies involved with shooting in Slovakia. Thank you for an incredible trip.

Regards,

Tom

Thank you for a fantastic extended weekend could not have enjoyed it more. All the best and thank you again.

Charlie

Dear Eva,

I cannot thank you enough for what proved to be a spectacular weekend. To generate such levels of excitement in a group of experienced guns was simply remarkable. Slovakian traditions on the shooting field added another dimension to our pheasant shooting, creating a fantastic environment albeit a wet one! However our first day pleasure was surpassed by the extraordinary second. Driven wild boar is something you simply must do, I have stood with this line of guns for several years and never have I seen exhilaration like it! The organization is perfect, from collection, accommodation, food and the occasional late night taxi trip to the sad moment we were returned to Vienna.

Thank you again for an amazing weekend and we will certainly be back!!

I mean, in case the case of wild boar perhaps it could be either - "battue" (esp. acc. to context) or driven wild boar shooting; either way, if beaters were sent in, I suppose the poor old boar might well go to bay rather than zoom out of the wood.

agree Susana Galilea : didn't see you :)

That's OK - happens to me too, thanks !
agree NancyLynn : I see the "drive" motif I found is in agreement with your findings, I'm just slow today ;-)

Thanks NancyLynn - hm, driven to bay, I suppose...
agree Tony M : OED confirms as well

battue

seems the French word is used in English as well

battue

SYLLABICATION: bat·tue
PRONUNCIATION: b-t, -ty
NOUN: 1. The beating of woods and bushes to flush game. 2. A hunt in which this is done.
ETYMOLOGY: French, feminine of battu, past participle of battre, to beat, from Old French batre. See batter1.

Drive is the desire to get out and hunt, and keep hunting., and bottom is the stamina to stay with a hog until it stops, whether it be in 1 mile or 10 miles....The only time they should bark, is when they are looking at a hog. They are gritty enough to make even a big a boar stop and fight, thus keeping him from running too far. We also expect them to be smart enough so that when a big boar stops to fight - the curs back up and bay. If he runs again they should fight him again, until he stops. They only need to hold the boar at bay until the Dogos get to them. When the Dogos catch the boar, the cur dogs are expected to catch and hold on as well. If it is a a sow or small boar we expect them to catch it by themselves. This degree of grittiness works well, however if we put 4 or 5 of these curs together, they will catch most any boar - or get killed trying to catch him. For this reason we usually run only 2 or 3 curs of this type together.

Does this fit your context?

Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : I agree that it would be nice to find a more 'English' term, but OED doesn't confirm it in this exact usage, and as this is hunting taking place in France, I think sticking with the FR/EN term is probably best
26 mins
probably - but see Rachel's final ref, calling it a driven hunt

I think this is more "English" than "battue".

Or "scouting" but I think that's before the actual hunt.

For drive, just because there's room here and not in the peer space:
"A drive is a good technique for hunting mature bucks, especially once deer have been pressured and have retreated into dense cover. With most methods a hunter tries hard to hide from deer, but a drive functions just the opposite way. A group of drivers enter a thick area thought to harbor deer. They break all the rules of stealthy hunting. They go in with the wind at their backs, which sends their scent toward the deer. The drivers walk fast, talk and sometimes yell to make sure the whitetails know they are coming."
http://www.huntingnet.com/staticpages/staticpage_detail.aspx...

"There are 5 main deer-hunting techniques: treestand hunting, still-hunting, drives and ground blind hunting, and spot and stalk hunting. All five can prove effective, depending on the situation and a hunter's weapon of choice."
http://www.huntingnet.com/staticpages/staticpage_detail.aspx...

So, you also have "stalking"...
"

Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : Unless you have positive confirmation of this, I think you'll find this is more about following game, rather than driving it, as done by 'beaters'

Hello Dusty. You're probably right. Maybe scouting then, although I've "hunted" around and I think it may be "drive" :-)
