French term

Relever les cheveux

French to English Other Linguistics
Hello-

It seems that we all know the meaning of "relever les cheveux."

In every case ever examined, it has the meaning of awoman wearing "her hair up." The hair on the back of her head (if it is long enough) is pulled up toward the back of her upper head or the center of it with some sort of fastener.

My question is to know if "relever les cheveux" can be used to mean that the hair is raised on the head as in "en l'air" or à la verticale". In honesty, I've never seen it used in that context. Can you "relever un cheveu/poil?"

faire dresser (mainly used in fixed expression, mettre en l'air, hérisser, mettre à la verticale, etc...???

In the context of "to stick up my hair in the front" for the latest in men's hairstyles."

Comment expliquer alors la coiffure masculine dite "le quasi-mohawk" qui est présentement très en vogue pour jeunes hommes dans les zones urbaines?

It seems so simple, but a rather complex translation query it is. Sometimes, what appears as the simplest of translation tasks ends up in a most pleasant headache.

Take care everyone

Sorry... I was looking for the French term. I admit I was a bit unclear.

But again, "relever les cheveux" or "avoir les cheveux relevs" often has the meaning of a woman wearing her hair up (in a French twist, for example). One can say "relever", "mettre en l'air" , or "mettre ? la verticale" les cheveux to mean that the hair is simply "raised."

It's not clear (to me at least) whether you're looking for the English or the correct French term, Matt.

to put one's hair up

"relever les cheveux" simply means put one's hair up in any fashion one likes regardless of where on the head or how high up the hair will be placed or the style, or the length of the hair, if one has short hair but uses hair spray the hair will be "relevé" meaning up.

I would use a metaphor

I don't think I would use relever les cheveux for a bun or any hairstyle for that matter.
For your mohawk I would say style Iroquois -that's what they call mohawks in France by the way- or compare the hair arrangement to? une balayette ? or whatever comes to mind.

agree mportal : yes, this is the term used by hairdressers (and probably barbers) for making the hair stick up ( - usually not required except on top!)

style your hair so that it sticks up (on top)

I don't think "wear your hair up" works for men's hairstyles, it's just used for women's hairstyles.

I don't think that there's a way around it, except to use a circumlocution like:

Style your hair with a quasi-mohawk (really!), by adding pomade to emphasize the hair in the middle of your head ***so that it sticks up***

I guess we men have yet to invent a full vocabulary to describe our hairstyles!
