French term

"Il se porte fort de ce que la chaine de ses fournisseurs y renonce de meme."

French to English Law/Patents Law: Contract(s)
Taken from general terms and conditions for the purchase of works and services, in the section headed "Transfer of ownership and risks" Just a bit confused about the meaning/structure of the entire sentence put together!
Proposed translations (English)
4 +1 guarantees (lit: 'goes surety for')

Belgian?
Emma Turner (asker) Aug 17, 2006:
The whole phrase reads: "Le Fournisseur renonce a se prevaloir d'une quelconque clause de reserve de propriete non expressement acceptee par l'Acheteur. (Then..) Il se porte fort de ce que la chaine de ses fournisseurs y renonce de meme" Does that make more sense now??
Francis MARC Aug 17, 2006:
mauvais français, peut-être "il se pourrait fort bien que", ou "il se porte garant que " (moins probable)

guarantees (lit: 'goes surety for')

"Se porter fort" has a similar meaning to 'se porter garant' (see Petit Robert). F H S Bridge's Legal Dictionary suggests "undertake to ensure that a third party does something" and refers to a "porte-fort" as a 'person who guarantees that another will do a specific thing".

In this context, the Supplier waives the right in question and guarantees that the whole chain of suppliers will waive the right also (in other words, if they don't, the Supplier will bear the consequences).
