The term "documentary evidence" may be a little pompous in context, but it may help. It retains the ambiguity of the original as "état" suggests some paper document but does nothing to describe its specific nature. "Etat" is a short word and "documentary evidence" does seem long, but perhaps not that far off the mark for meaning. "Signature" can of course be read as being more specific than "émargement" as it can also mean initials etc.

I think one has to be a bit vague here, as this could mean anything from a piece of paper on which the issuer has recorded a payment and initialed it, to a recipient signature on a form or scribbled initials in a poorly drawn up register, even a cross or a thumbprint if the recipient is illiterate. The point being that the "état d'émargement" is unreliable as evidence.

That is why I suggested "notes of receipt", i.e. informal notes that something was received, not "receipt", which is a formal document.
