Given the context you provide, I think a tweak on your own suggestion would work.
I think you need the 'somewhat' (or 'a little', 'a bit' ...) to convey the 'un peu' in the original, but the use of the term 'belated' is correct.

: I just feel a bit uncomfortable about 'belated childhood' — after all, her childhood took place at the age it usually does (unlike, for example 'belated puberty') — it was just perhaps that she didn't fully experience it at that time...
