Elle résulterait d’une commande faite par les partisans d’al-Mughîra, en particulier le cercle des fityân, des pages-officiers du palais .
Une vingtaine de pièces complètes en ivoire – pyxides et coffrets à couvercle plat ou taluté – plus une dizaine de plaques fragmentaires, datent du califat de Cordoue. Elles sont étroitement associées à l’expression du pouvoir et à l’histoire de la dynastie. Un bandeau épigraphique, à la base du couvercle, livre généralement le nom du destinataire, la date de fabrication et parfois le nom de l’atelier et de l’artiste. Avant 970, les destinataires sont exclusivement la mère, la fille, le fils du calife. Sur trois objets apparaît le nom de Madinat al-Zahra. Nous connaissons aussi le nom de Khalaf, un ivoirier à qui l’on doit la pyxide de la reine Subh, favorite du calife al-Hakam II et mère d’Hishâm.

Page suggests perhaps a more noble position, but coupled with 'officier' I believe footman gives about the right picture.
