A fibula (pl. fibulae) was a pin used to clasp the clothes (Pallium, Toga, etc.) together. It comes from the verb figere [to fix, fasten]. The thinner of the two long bones in the calf is calso called a fibula because it resembles the pin used to clasp the clothes.
