French term

Adjoint administratif de 1ere classe

French to English Other Government / Politics Education
Good afternoon!

I am translating a document giving leave of absence to a civil servant due to illness.

I would be grateful for suggestions as to how to translate the following post:

Adjoint administratif de l'éducation nationale et de l'enseignement supérieur 1ère classe.

See here:

Thank you for your trouble!

liz askew (asker) Jan 30, 2010:
Assistant administrative officer?
liz askew (asker) Jan 30, 2010:
I really thought it was something far grander than "administrative assistant" as this is a top civil service position (so it seems to me). See here, they even have to go through top-notch exams to get this post.

Carruthers (X) Jan 30, 2010:
1ere classe, would correspond to Grade A in the civil service. But I think adjoint administratif is a bit higher upon in the pecking order than assistant. A vérifier.
Chris Hall Jan 30, 2010:
adjoint administratif =
administrative assistant

Administrative assistant, first category

Administrative assistant: OK with Jessica.

"De 1ère classe": maybe "first category" better refers to the global wages and salaries French system.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Paul Hamelin : There are 4 grades in this category (C) and this position is the second lowest.//Les catégories (A-C) sont subdivisées en grades et échelons (1-11).

agree Chris Hall

Always alive and kicking, Chris, I see. Merci. A bientôt.
agree Conor McAuley : This source says the category is sub-divided into 10 grades (échelons) https://www.emploi-collectivites.fr/grille-indiciaire-territ...

senior administrative assistant

Looking at the salaries in your google entry, I think that this is an appropriate answer.

[junior] administrative assistant

In the reference I gave yesterday (or the day before) about body-grade, one can see that "adjoint administratif" is in the lowest category of the French Ministry of Education (category C, A being the highest).
Then, the order of the "classes" (= grades) is as follows:
2e classe, 1re classe, principal de 2e classe, principal de 1re classe.

"Adjoint administratif de 1ere classe" is thus the second lowest rank of the lowest category.
This is why I think that "junior administrative assistant" or only "administrative assistant" corresponds well to the French administrative structure.
Example sentence:

Les agents de catégorie C sont, depuis le protocole Jacob, regroupés en un seul corps, les adjoints administratifs (AA) de l'éducation nationale et de l'enseignement supérieur. Ils sont chargés des tâches d'exécution ou de secrétariat.

Note from asker:
Hi, just looked into the context a bit more, and even found the person concerned on a website, so am going to stick with Chris' original suggestion of "administrative assistant". Thank you!

Peer comment(s):

disagree Paul Hamelin : as repeatedly said, it's a clerk position, the second lowest in rank. Nothing to do with a director or deputy director

administrative assistant first class

NO comma. Like "private first class" in the military. The "administrative assistant" part suffices to describe the job. For the grade, stick as closely as possible to the French; no need to substitute a non-cognate word.

This exact title has existed in the US civil service, even though it may not now exist. Go for a semantic equivalent, forget the cultural equivalent.
