French term

(elles) sont mues

French to English Social Sciences Government / Politics UN and indigenous peoples
Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated...

Jugées indispensables au bon fonctionnement des conférences des Nations Unies consacrées aux droits des peuples autochtones, les activités du projet *sont mues* par une éthique de non ingérence, de service, d’impartialité, de réciprocité et d’égalité pour toutes et tous.

Many thanks in advance,
Jocelyne

B D Finch Mar 7, 2007:
But see my revised response to H M-H.
B D Finch Mar 7, 2007:
The past participle of mouvoir is **mû** with a circonflex!
MatthewLaSon Mar 7, 2007:
I mean present passive progressive tense. I think that's what it's called. LOL.
MatthewLaSon Mar 7, 2007:
I think passive progressive tense may be best here.: are being + past participle
Jocelyne S (asker) Mar 7, 2007:
Hello Icetrance,
The activities are ongoing. I had "are proprelled by", but wasn't happy. I think that Helene's or CMJ's suggestions below work well.
Thank you, Jocelyne
MatthewLaSon Mar 7, 2007:
Have these activities already begun and are still continuing? That's what I meant to ask you?
MatthewLaSon Mar 7, 2007:
Have the activities already taken place in the recent past? I'm debating on whether the present perfect tense should be used or not. An ethic of...has been/is the driving force for the project's activities? "has been prompted by/is prompted by."

are driven by

"Mu(e)" comes from the verb "mouvoir", in case it helps.

neutral MatthewLaSon : I'm not trying to split hairs here. We aren't dealing with the general simple present tense in passive voice here, but rather present progressive tense in passive voice. Put this sentence in active voice first: are prompting > are being prompted by

neutral B D Finch : Yes, I think you are right, it is far more likely that a **û **would have been written as **u** than a **é** as **e**.

No, the past participle of muer is mué, so it would be muée in this case. Here, we're talking about "mouvoir". cf leconjugueur.com

at the heart of the initiatives

I think it is ''mouvoir'' in a figurative sense, the essence of the activities. What is at the core (relating to ''indispensable'') and moves the project forward.

are being prompted by

Hello,

The project's activities are being prompted by...

I prefer "are being + past participle"

It just sounds more English to me in this context.

I hope this helps.

Yes, this has been suggested in comments and I think it fits best with the notion of values.
