field expedition

If I were to hazard a guess.

"de terrain" in any case I'm certain is "field"; what I'm not sure about is the translation for "campagne". It's not "campaign" for sure...I would think either "expedition", "project", or something in that vein.

site investigation

If this concerns "GEOLOGY" as opposed to archaeology, then it would be "site investigation campaign", IOW series of tests, geological prospecting etc. aimed at identifying the underlying geology (for example, to determine if the stone used to build the pyramids as actually available in the area, at what depth beneath the sand, que sais-je. As opposed to a laboratory testing on rock and soil samples taken duing the site investigations.

If it is a campaign of archaeological investigations, then the above "field expedition" might work, though I'm not sure "expedition" is still said these days. Is that not more appropriate for the days when archaeologists stood a good chance of coming home with a Masai spear lodged between their shoulderblades or an ancient mummy in hot pursuit (and I'm not talking about what archaeologists got up to with young local women)?

Reference to palaeontologists suggests to me at least that the research was more geological than archaeological.

agree Carolingua : Thanks for your comments; it's important to take the context and audience into account! You may be right about "expedition" being more of a layperson's term (which is why it came into my mind...I'm not a geologist!)
