cartography
This is in a document by the Canadian government about how to update terrain maps.
Limits of change ?
Merci a l'avance

For Liz:
The 'change tolerance' - as suggested in the explanation of 'tolérance de changement' in Hattie's source text and referred to my my webrefs - refers to the magnitude of differences between successive measurements of a given parameter.
Some examples:
- terrain height (vertical displacement) at the peak of an active volcano
- high-water mark on the coastline which may move as a result of rising sea levels (horizontal displacement)
- changes in the size of 'features' such as bodies of water (the Caspian Sea, for example) or cities
- changes in political or administrative boundaries, etc. etc.
When updating the map, changes falling within the 'tolerance' are disregarded and only changes in excess of the tolerance are recorded.

More stuff for Liz:
Although the context is a bit different, 'tolérance de change' is used in the following webrefs to determine what degree of difference is required between successive frames of a video signal before a motion sensor in a video surveillance system will decide 'this scene has changed (maybe because there's an intruder on the premises), therefore we need to record a new frame'. There's a clear analogy with the mapping context - are these changes significant, do we bother to record them?

I wondering if 'tolérance de changement' in Hattie's source text might be a poor translation of the standard English term 'change tolerance'. In this webref (from Canada), the term 'seuil de changement' appears:

: 'tolerance' is being used in your webrefs to refer to a different concept - the degree of accuracy of terrain height measurements/estimates.
