open defects
<<open defect - Any hole or gap in timber or ply, such as checks, splits, knotholes, wormholes, or open joints>>
[Scott/Penguin Dict. of Building]
<<open defect - An unfilled hole or gap in lumber, plywood, or wood veneer>>
[Dictionary of Architecture & Construction, McGHill]
No mention in my sources of "open character", but my sources are technical, not commercial, and Isabel's references are convincing in that respect. Like moles on your cheeks, "defects" are obviously not good selling points, but call the same things a "beauty spot" or a "character" and you're onto a winner.
Similarly, when an architect screws up, he calls his error a "feature" and adds 25% onto the bill.
