My brain just can't come up with anything.

Discussion

Tony M Jun 11, 2007:
And if I DO fall back on ProZ term search, I ALWAYS select 'also search reverse language pair', which has proved invaluable on many occasions!
writeaway Jun 11, 2007:
it's best to search via Google. for example type premier prix (or any word/phrase you need), : kudoz. it's much more efficient than a glossary search most of the time.
Miranda Joubioux (X) (asker) Jun 11, 2007:
I did look to see whether it had been asked before, but couldn't find it. I must change my settings to include English to French - sorry!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Lots of possibilities here, but I chose this one. The references clinched it for me."

best buy/best price/best value

These are some examples of what are used for "premier prix" on packaging and in aisles. It depends on where it is being used. It can also be refered to as "entry-level price" or even "every day low price" (EDLP).

bargain

Just another one to add into the melting pot; although of course it doesn't per se mean 'a bargain' (as a noun), shops often talk about their 'bargain range', for example (using it as an adjective)

Just as a general note, 'premier...' used like this always means 'the cheapest' (first on the price list) — you find it a lot with restaurants, where the 'premier menu' is the lowest-priced one.

It has been asked before, but in a different context.

"Discount" is another alternative that I don't think has been suggested yet.

We sometimes jokingly refer to these things as bottom-shelf stuff because that's where it tends to be put in our local Leclerc/Super U!!

agree Tony M : (and yes, it has!) // Absolutely!

Thanks, Tony. To be fair to Miranda, I didn't find w/a's link but the one found by Mara which relates to a different field. I don't think terms such as "entry level" can be used here.
agree French Foodie : yes, it has. It was about cars, though, but still might be helpful for Asker: http://www.proz.com/kudoz/1154347 //the selected answer wouldn't apply, but they do also mention best price and bargain range, which I think would work well in this context...

Thanks, Mara. I don't think the various responses given in answer to JS's query apply here though.

agree writeaway : you'd think they fix it instead of wasting their time rewriting ruleZ. fwiw- no full stop at the end and no ". just word : kudoz

Thanks for the tip re. Google. KudoZ's built-in search feature is its weak point, IMHO.
