The key
factor which influenced the mechanical arrangement, apart from the
horizontal split casing, was the need to have a packed gland shaft seal.
With the requirement to ensure a practical gap between the gland seal,
which leaks under normal operation, and the bearing housing resultant
shaft between bearings span was high.

Presses-étoupe des arbres makes more sense and corresponds to the answers below, so far.
However, what is being repaired, the seal or the shaft? Maybe it should read arbres à presse-étoupe.
