Paper on teaching & building competencies
This teaching paper is discussing here the building of competencies in terms of the psychological processes. It has been discussing how we work out problems (using arithmetic as the example).
The context in this part reads:
I was considering using "contest" but this does not seem right as I don't think this gives the idea that the student is competing against another student. Or should it actually be translated this way?

contest
In this context, I agree with Lara that this fits best (see discussion)

: so the students are competing against each other?/the French can go anywhere they want to with their words. It's one of the challenges of translating Fr. It looks like it's very easy to translate but it's actually extremely tricky. dicos are just guides

Well, I don't know, but since the writers used "concours" (which definitely includes the notion of competition) rather than "test" or "exercice" then one assumes it is each other they're competing with?
"Extremely tricky" is an understatement!! :-D

Daryo
: "contest" gives the wrong associations; here there's no prize to win of any kind, nor the point is in winning; it's about testing/establishing differences in the ability to solve some problems.

done! :-)
Macmillan defines contest as "a competition, especially one in which people's skill in a particular activity or sport is tested" so I think it's perfect.
