digital restoration of historic films
Talking about the restoration of a film. All the other films in this list did not get this treatment, so what can it consist of? What "elements" would need separate fabrication?

preservation elements
I'm no expert in this field, but found what seems like a pretty good explanation on the site of a post-production company:
"Preservation elements, such as fine grain master positives and duplicate printing negatives, are generated from this restoration master element to make both duplication masters and access projection prints available to future generations. When restoration and preservation budgets are lower the images are transferred directly to video or digital media for easy transport and copying."

Not many ghits for this, but the ones there are seem technically relevant.

Ta! Yes, that website explains the whole "preservation/restoration" thing very clearly it seems to me.

: makes perfect sense the original is too precious to handle often so a "as good as" copy is made to preserve the content. I would be tempted to call that a "preservation/conservation master copy"
