français term
liaison de retour son
français vers anglais
Technique / Génie
Cinéma, film, TV, théâtre
Term taken from French radio frequency regulations:
"Les équipements auxiliaires sonores de conception de programmes et de radiodiffusion sont composés de microphones sans fil et d'équipements audio sans fil permettant notamment des liaisons de retour son et des liaisons d'ordre. Ils sont essentiellement utilisés par les professionnels de l’audiovisuel et du spectacle".
Is this an earpiece worn by a live broadcaster or performer (a sound monitor)?
Literal translation ("sound return link") not required.
Thanks

(audio) foldback link
In many contexts, 'retour' can be translated as 'foldback'

Note that 'feedback' cannot be used, since that terms refers to the undesirable phenomenon of 'howlround' ('effet Larsen'); one might conceivably refer to it as 'a feed of [something] back to the performer...', but that really is complicating things when a perfectly good, standard term already exists in 'foldback' — which can refer to all sorts of different kinds of sound feeds; only if the context is known more specifically can one risk choosing something more restrictive, but in the context given here, it seems to me the most general, all-embracing term possible is called for.

An alternative term might be 'return feed' — that's about as general and non-committal as one can get, I think!

Thanks a lot, R!

: This def. would confirm it: foldback n (in multitrack recording) process for returning a signal to a performer instantly, aka cueing.

Thanks, J! Oh yes, I've worked long enough in sound engineering to know what I'm talking about here ;-)

either this or sth quite similar IMO

Tony M
: 'playback' is too specific, IMHO; it could be that, but it could also be plenty of other things... / If a singer has their own voice 'folded back' to them, that couldn't be described as 'playback', now could it?

Playback IMO is the best equivalent for retour son across contexts, whereas “monitor” or “foldback” are far more specific.

Jennifer Levey
: Tony is being too generous - this is not correct. // A radio-frequency 'liaison de retour son' is used for live feedback, not playback of recorded material.

For a "disagree", a reason is required. "This is not correct" is not a reason.//I think I can see your point. How about "feedback" instead of "playback" then?
