French term

société à responsabilité

French to English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general)
In a contract, a company is identified as being a "société à responsabilité au capital de...." . At first I though it was a mistake for an SARL but a google search has shown lots of hits for this expression. What exactly does it mean and how best to translate? The company is not named in the contract but it is possible that it is an African company and not a French one. thanks

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

The client said it was merely a SARL
cmwilliams (X) Feb 26, 2009:
Are you sure it's not an SARL? You mentioned lots of Ghits for this expression. Maybe it's just me but I can't seem to find any. All hits I find are for responsabilité limitée.

neutral cmwilliams (X) : I think it's just a mistake for SARL. For example, in the first of the French references above, it states that the company is an SARL at the beginning, so the bit at the end is just an error. Could be the same for the others.

could be a variation but there are too many in both languages for it to be a mistake

société à responsabité

The legal definitions of S.A., S.A.R.L. and English Inc, Limited Liability, etc. are different according to jurisdiction.

To reflect this, it is customary to use the original french, "Société à Responsabilité" in Italics (to indicate that it is in a foreign language) and put your translation in parentheses). Something

The difference among these forms of incorporation in different countries and can be important.
