clair étage

French to English Other Architecture Parts of a church or cathedral
"Elle se caractérise par son élévation à quatre étages : rez-de-chaussée, tribunes, triforium aveugle, ***clair étage***, et par les décorations ornant les chapiteaux de ses colonnes : végétaux, animaux, représentations humaines."

No idea about this one. Obviously the fourth "floor" or level, but beyond that...

agree Christopher Crockett : No question, one of the experiments in "Early Gothic," like Laon: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=4254111 architecture. A "direct translation," perhaps, but I've never, ever seen this term in nearly 50 years of reading the French literature.
