French term

en butée axiale

French to English Tech/Engineering Aerospace / Aviation / Space
compressor housing

"... ces moyens de blocage en translation axiale supplémentaires peuvent consister en une partie d’une bride de fixation usinée directement dans un autre carter agencé en continuité contre laquelle une partie du(es) bouclier(s) est en butée axiale"

The image I have in my mind is a lug/slug/plug/pin/tab stopping a thing which wants to rotate from rotating. So the second housing follows on from the first and the shield(s) in the first housing are prevented from rotating by the attaching flange/bottom flange/mounting clip/fastening clip/support clamp/anchorage bridle/overlap flange in the second. Am I getting warm?

Mpoma (asker) Feb 6, 2011:
true you're right as ever. Alain's suggestion may still be right, it seems to me. So sthg's stopping a "part" of the "shield(s)" moving along an axis, right? Hmmm. The preceding sentence goes: "Il est envisageable de prévoir des moyens de blocage en translation axiale du(es) bouclier(s) supplémentaires. Avantageusement, ces moyens..." Not that enlightening. The whole context would have me worrying what I can and can't "disclose"... and even then I don't think much light would be shone...
Tony M Feb 6, 2011:
axial I don't think its anything to do with stopping something from rotating: note that this is axial, not radial; generally, that would mean to stop it moving in an axial direction, i.e. a long the axis of the element, rather than radially or in rotation.

However, without a clearer picture in my mind of the rest of your context, I can't see quite exactly what's going on here.
