Just the old granny's saying. I do understand it perfectly but I don't like sayings that much and can't find a French equivalent. Thanks!

Google will never make up for our lack of culture!
We should not stick to the small stock of words and expressions we know especially when given the choice. We should go forward and not let ourselves go with the main and impoverished flow.
Lany Chabot-Laroche Dec 12, 2007:
Even though it is the correct equivalence, google only gives it 43 hits, which makes it a very, very rarely heard expression. Sometimes it's better be a little off the track than not to be understood at all.

Thanks for your comment, but you probably agree that a litteral translation is not always what we're looking for? I have never heard "un point à temps en vaut cent" though I'm French and I needed something really well-known in my translation. I guess the other suggestion might have worked pretty well in another text, not in mine
LesBrets Dec 12, 2007:
I'm not specialist but from my dictionary, "mieux vaut prévenir que guérir" corresponds to "prevention is better than cure" and the real translation here is the other one given byCMJ and Melzie - all is in the dictionary by the way!
