Neolithic finds like this one are very important because in spite of the lack of written texts, archaeolog-its can study the artifacts and the site layout to piece together many aspects of ancient life.
An amazing thing that archaeolo¬gists discovered is that these Neolithic jade workers used quite advanced technology. Archaeologist Zhang Jingguo, who is supervising the ongo¬ing excavation, says that the jade objects show the artists knew some fancy carving techniques. Jade is an exceptionally hard mineral that can only be carved by using even harder substances, such as quartz sand or (in later times) diamond. The Lingjiatan artisans made special drills that not only were strong enough to carve with but also made straight holes, even when they were spinning at high speeds. To do this, members of this ancient culture had to know high-level science and math.
