Spanish term

índice sintético de sostenibilidad

Spanish to English Social Sciences Other
This term comes up a lot in a text I'm working on. Although I have found examples of "Synthetic sustainability index", I can only find it in translated texts, so I'm looking for confirmation.
Any other ideas? All help greatly appreciated. Examples similar to the ones in my text:

Thanks, everybody, for your help. My client chose composite in the end.
Chema Nieto Castañón Mar 31, 2020:
@patinba It is just great you brought up a natural -and acknowledged- term. Your defense is far more convincing now, by the way ;)
¡Saludos!
patinba Mar 30, 2020:
@Chema As I said, I cheated, replacing my first attempt and reposting a better suggestion, which is in the OECD Glossary of Statistical Terms. However, your "aggregate" is also exactly the same idea.
Chema Nieto Castañón Mar 30, 2020:
I have just seen patinba's answer and he really clears out the meaning of sintético here -which means this index is an aggregation (combination) of different indexes. Not sure though how best to say this in English as there are too many non-original English texts out there talking about this. My own bet is aggregate or aggregated sustainability index, but there might be a better rendering after all.
Marie Wilson (asker) Mar 30, 2020:
That's right Phil. You beat me to it.
Marie Wilson (asker) Mar 30, 2020:
@Tom It's basically about environmental management and sustainable development in seaports.
philgoddard Mar 30, 2020:
Tom I agree that it gets hardly any hits, and all those I looked at were translations. But I actually think we have enough context - the sustainability of a port is its impact on the environment and on society.
Thomas Walker Mar 30, 2020:
Synthetic? There is a lot of info on "sustainability index," but when I try to add in "synthetic," it goes nowhere.
There are quite a lot of different contexts where the idea of a "sustainability index" is brought into play - from business enterprises to government to sociology of cultures to ecosystems, and more. Can you tell us a little more about the context you're working in?

composite sustainability indicator

I'm cheating a bit here, but having posted a slightly different answer a few minutes ago I saw that the paper my quote came from has been published in English, as indicated below:

Explanation:
Sintético does not come directly from "synthetic" but from "synthesis". What they are saying is that they have combined a series of indexes to form a connected whole.

The following text shows this:

Definition: A composite indicator is formed when individual indicators are compiled into a single index, on the basis of an underlying model of the multi-dimensional concept that is being measured.Dec 10, 2004

sustainability index

I don't think you need to translate 'sintético'. That's what an index does - it synthesizes or summarizes.

aggregate [aggregated] sustainability index

I would include "sintético" in the translation. I believe "aggregate" or "aggregated" might be the common equivalent term in English. I have also found "combined sustainability index". It is really hard though to sort out English originals...

For example,

The previous four sub-variables are then be combined into our aggregate sustainability index.

In the JRC SusTrans Index each sustainability dimension is represented by the corresponding aggregated sustainability index (e.g. economic transport sustainability index, social transport sustainability index, etc.).

aggregated sustainability index, that can be considered a yardstick for eco-certification purposes

For example, the class 1 sector neutral US Aggregate Sustainability Index will have the same Treasury, government-related, corporate, and securitized sector weights as the flagship US Aggregate Index.

Analysis of the indicators to determine a measure of sustainability. In some cases the
various indicators are aggregated to give economic, social and environmental indices of sustainability, or even a single combined “sustainability” index.
