I wouldn't be so sure. Mucous lake by definition is a situation where there is a pool of mucous. In this case it does not make much sense. I cannot write:
In the mucous lake there is pale watery content with an admixture of mucous.
And the 'lake' on its own does not sound right either.
There is only 460 entries in Google for your suggestion with the inverted commas.
