I believe both sets of responses are correct, but I chose Rabbas' because of the sharper tone, which fit in with the rest of the context.

Sure thing, but my translation does not detract from that meaning. "Big deal" means it is not a big deal so why worry your head about it, likewise "so what!". Besides, Dr. Kamal is not using an idiomatic equivalents, but literal ones.
